White label vs private label: which should you start with in India?

By Ravinthiran Partheepan and Subasree Ravinthiran · · 5 min read

If you want to start a brand without a factory, you will meet two terms quickly: white label and private label. They sound similar, but they lead to different costs, timelines and risks.

The short answer

Start with white label when speed and cash are your limits. Move to private label once you know which product sells and you want something competitors cannot copy exactly.

What is a white-label product?

A white-label product is made by a manufacturer and sold to many sellers, each of whom adds their own logo and packaging. You do not design the product. You choose it, brand it and sell it.

What is a private-label product?

A private-label product is made for one brand, often to its own specification: its own formulation, fabric, size or design. It takes longer to develop and usually needs a bigger commitment up front.

How they compare

  • Speed: white label is faster because the product already exists.
  • Exclusivity: private label is more exclusive; other sellers may offer the same white-label item.
  • Investment: white label usually needs less money to start; private label usually needs more.
  • Customisation: white label mostly changes branding; private label can change the product itself.

How to choose

  • Testing an idea? Use white label and learn from real sales.
  • Have one product that clearly sells? Talk to manufacturers about a private-label version.
  • Selling in a category with licensing or labelling rules (food, cosmetics and others)? Check what applies before you launch either way.
